Why Did Sophie Turner’s Career Stall After Leaving “Game Of Thrones”?

Sophie Turner was once one of the most well-known actress on television thanks to her starring role of Games of Thrones, which she was a part of for all of its eight seasons. But since the show wrapped up in 2019, Sophie has had few acting roles that compare to her long-running stint on the HBO series.

She’s had supporting roles in television series like The Staircase and The Prince, and made appearances in films like Do Revenge (2022) and Heroin (2019), but the roles have been sporadic and often minor. This has led fans to question what’s made Sophie’s career stall after having such a successful run on Game of Thrones.

Now that Sophie is divorcing Joe Jonas following four years of marriage, much is coming to light about their relationship and the ways it may have impacted her career. Needless to say, the reasons Sophie’s career appears stagnant may not be what fans initially think.

Sophie was only 23-years old when she married Joe in 2019. He was considerably older, at 29. Now that the two are divorcing, reports say that the actress regrets settling down and having kids at such a young age, and believes it’s limited her career opportunities.

“Sophie feels like she’s only just waking up to what her life and reality really is,” a source recently told Daily Mail. “She became famous at a very young age, then married and had kids at a young age and never really had the teenage years of sleeping around and just having carefree fun with friends.”

“She feels like her life has stalled after ‘Game of Thrones’ and so has her personal life,” the insider went on. “Since the kids came along, she’s feeling trapped. She’s the only person in her tight friendship group who is married with two children.”

Joe initially filed for divorce from Sophie in September after weeks of speculation. The couple later confirmed the news in a joint statement shared via social media.

At the time, it was reported their daughters – 3-year old Will and 1-year old Delphine – were in the primary care of their father while he toured the US with the Jonas Brothers, and Sophie was abroad filming. The actress has since been seen in America with her daughters as the two try to co-parent.

Nonetheless, Sophie has filed a lawsuit against Joe amid their split, saying she only learned of his intention to divorce through the media.

Moreover, Sophie says they were planning to relocate to the UK with their kids, after living primarily in the US the last few years. However, he appears to have changed his mind, as Joe filed for divorce while Sophie was filming a movie abroad.

Now, Sophie claims he’s withholding their daughters’ passports, despite her desire to take them back to her native England, as she says was already the plan. Joe later denied all of Sophie’s allegations in a statement from his representative.

Another reason Sophie likely hasn’t been putting as much energy into her acting career is because her mental health has reportedly been suffering. Recent reports claim that Sophie began to struggle after the birth of her and Joe’s second child in 2022, while he was allegedly not supportive.

A source told TMZ that Sophie was reluctant to go out in public or attend events after baby no. 2 was born, and Joe wasn’t understanding, causing a rift in their relationship.

However, it appears the actress may have been struggling with her mental health even before becoming a young mother. She’s previously discussed the trauma she endured filming graphic scenes at a young after while portraying Sansa Stark on HBO’s Game of Thrones.

Sophie Turner Feels She Has Been Typecast As A Jonas Brother’s Wife

While there’s a theory that Sophie was typecast thanks to her popular role in GoT, but the actress has said the fame she got from the show has given her a boost in Hollywood. In 2017, for instance, Sophie said she beat out a more talented actress for a role simply because she had more of an online following.

This suggests that Sophie’s successful Game of Thrones role hasn’t hindered her ability to book other roles. But the actress believes she’s become typecast as something else – a Jonas Brothers wife.

Sophie apparently struggled with always being identified as Joe’s wife in media reports, overshadowing her career accomplishments, and always being compared to her sisters-in-law Priyanka Chopra (married to Nick Jonas) and Danielle Jonas (married to Kevin Jonas).

“Sophie didn’t want to always be ‘the Jonas brother’s wife,’” one source claimed. “She didn’t want to go on tour and do everything together. It’s not her personality, and she wanted to keep their family separate from all the Jonas Brothers hoopla.”

Being a mom on the road is not easy, even when you have unlimited resources,” they further said. “It was just hard for them to settle into a regular routine because of Joe’s career especially.”

It appears Sophie believes that not only being a young mom but the wife of a famous rockstar has altered the course of her career. But with Sophie and Joe’s divorce ongoing, perhaps she’ll find more professional opportunities as she regains her independence.
