The Biggest Plot Holes Explained

  • Fans have noticed inconsistencies between The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon, such as a major plot hole regarding Sheldon’s father’s affair.
  • The Young Sheldon creators don’t feel obligated to follow all Big Bang Theory storylines, making changes for the new series’ benefit.
  • Other plot holes, like Sheldon meeting Stephen Hawking as a child and Missy and Sheldon’s relationship discrepancies, have also been spotted.

Audiences were introduced to Sheldon Cooper (played by Jim Parsons) on The Big Bang Theory in 2007. The comedy about a group of scientists became a huge international hit, spawning a prequel in 2017, Young Sheldon, about a pre-teen Sheldon (played by Ian Armitage). While the prequel has amassed a huge following, many fans have complained about the plot holes it has created.

Sheldon Cooper often spoke about his childhood on The Big Bang Theory, and fans love to work out if his anecdotes match the events of the show’s prequel, Young Sheldon.

Young Sheldon started airing ten seasons into The Big Bang Theory, so the original comedy already had a decade’s worth of lore to keep up with. Even though many of the callbacks to the Jim Parsons sitcom are purely Easter eggs, some fans have noticed inconsistencies and plot holes. Between the two shows, fans have spotted that not all the plots or details about Sheldon’s life match up.

In the following, we take a look at what might be the biggest plot hole in Young Sheldon and why Young Sheldon doesn’t exactly follow the storylines laid out in The Big Bang Theory through Sheldon Cooper’s memories.

Fans Say This Is The Biggest Young Sheldon Plot Hole

Lance Barber as George Cooper in Season 1 Young Sheldon

Young Sheldon appears to have diverged from The Big Bang Theory canon by skipping over the moment Sheldon Cooper walks in on his father with another woman. Adult Sheldon explained in The Big Bang Theory that this defining childhood moment is why he knocks three times before entering a room.

After Season 6, Episode 17 of Young Sheldon, “A German Folk Song and an Actual Adult,” picked up at the start of teenage Sheldon’s spring break, fans expected the CBS show to tackle his father, George’s extramarital affair. However, the 18th episode totally jumps to spring break and shows Sheldon and his sister, Missy, returning to school.

Kaley Cuoco’s Forgotten Young Sheldon Cameo Had Her Teasing Sheldon Long Before The Big Bang Theory

Kaley Cuoco returned to torment Sheldon in Young Sheldon, but many fans don’t remember this moment.

Young Sheldon executive producer Steve Holland explained why Sheldon wouldn’t walk in on his father during the sixth season of the CBS show.

“Without saying it didn’t happen, we’re not obligated to tell all the stories that Sheldon told on
Big Bang.

He told TV Line in March 2023, “I’m not saying we are or we are not [telling that story], but it’s not happening in Season 6.”

However, this plot could take place in the show last season. “It could potentially happen in Season 7, and it’s a possibility we’ve talked about a lot, so it’s on the table,” he added. “But just because it happened doesn’t mean it’s a story [our narrator] has to tell.”

Sheldon also remembers his father for being an absent alcoholic, which gave fans of The Big Bang Theory a negative impact on George. While George Cooper in Young Sheldon does like a beer every now and then, he is hardly the messy drunk portrayed in the original sitcom.

Why Young Sheldon Doesn’t Stick To Big Bang Theory Storylines

Co-creator Steven Molaro has explained why he doesn’t oppose Young Sheldon contradicting the events of The Big Bang Theory because he doesn’t believe it’s a “precise roadmap.”

“We don’t feel handcuffed to things that were said on Big Bang. I mean, there are some things that we will honor, but we also have to do what’s best for this series. If anybody points to something that doesn’t align perfectly with Big Bang.”

He also pointed out that other spin-offs have changed the canon. “I’m happy to point out that on Cheers, Frasier was an only child, and it all worked out once Niles suddenly appeared.”

Other Major Young Sheldon Plot Holes From Big Bang Theory’s Canon

Young Sheldon Season 2

Sheldon Cooper Meets Stephen Hawking In Young Sheldon, But That’s Not Mentioned In Big Bang Theory

Theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking is a hero to Sheldon Cooper. When Sheldon meets him as an adult at CalTech, he is understandably excited to meet his hero, but there is one issue: he met him as a child. In Young Sheldon season 3, episode 16, “Pasadena,” Sheldon enjoys an all-expense paid trip to see a Hawking lecture at CalTech. This is never mentioned in The Big Bang Theory, something that seems out of character for a man like Cooper.

Missy And Sheldon Cooper’s Young Sheldon Relationship Differs From What We Know In The Big Bang Theory

Missy Cooper, played by Raegan Revord, is one of the most inconsistent people in the world of the Coopers. She is a main character in Young Sheldon and appears a handful of times in The Big Bang Theory. The stories adult Sheldon tells the audience often don’t match up with the events of the recent CBS sitcom. For example, adult Missy claims Sheldon once built a robot to keep her out of their room, but for the majority of Young Sheldon, the siblings share a bedroom.

When Did Sheldon Cooper Actually Get His Safety Whistle?

Sheldon, a creature of habit, always carries around a safety whistle. In The Big Bang Theory, he explains it was a gift given to him by his girlfriend, Amy Farrah Fowler. In the prequel, he already has this whistle in his backpack. Sheldon has a photographic memory, so fans were quick to call out the inaccuracies.

Lance Barber First Appeared In A Big Bang Theory Role Totally Unrelated To His Young Sheldon Character

Lance Barber was cast in a small role on The Big Bang Theory long before his stint on Young Sheldon, and fans find it peculiar.

Sheldon Cooper’s Grandfather Is Noticibly Skipped Over In Young Sheldon

Sheldon also credits his grandfather for getting him into science before he passed away. In Young Sheldon, his grandfather has already passed away. In the CBS comedy, he is not often spoken about, and there are no photos of him in either Connie or Sheldon’s home. For someone who made such a big impact on his life, he doesn’t have a presence on the show.

Dr. Sturgis Created On Of Young Sheldon’s Most Confusing Big Bang Theory Plot Holes

Dr. Sturgis is Sheldon’s mentor during Young Sheldon, yet is rarely mentioned by an adult Sheldon. Fans often wondered why Sturgis was not references, especially when Sheldon won his Nobel Prize. This may be explained in Young Sheldon season 6, episode 18, “Little Green Men and A Fella’s Marriage Proposal,” when Sheldon “dismisses” Dr. Sturgis as a mentor after he refuses to help him search for life on other planets.

While the pair are cordial, their relationship is never fixed. As Sheldon is the unforgiving type, it’s not entirely uncharacteristic for him to cut someone out his life.
